چکیده

This paper describes a technique to support interoperable query processing when multiple heterogeneous databases are accessed. We focus on the problem of supporting query transformation transparently , so a user can pose queries locally, without any need of global knowledge about diierent data models and schemas. To support interoperable query transformation, we need to resolve the connicts (i.e., represen-tational heterogeneities) for diierent databases. The connicts exist because semantically equivalent concepts may be deened in diierent ways in each model/schema. Further, we also need to consider the connicts due to the diierent query language utilized by each database. We propose two kinds of parameterized canonical representations, as a means of classifying and resolving heterogeneities. The rst canonical representation resolves heterogeneity based on query languages. The second canonical form resolves representational het-erogeneity based on using two diierent schemas/data models. This paper will focus on the second canonical representation. We rst enumerate the representational heterogeneities, and then explain how we can use the canonical representation to resolve these connicts. We brieey describe an algorithm for building the canonical knowledge base, and also an architecture for supporting interoperability. A query transformation mechanism will operate on the local query and the canonical knowledge base to generate an appropriate query for a remote database.

Interoperable Query Processing among Heterogeneous Databases

The proliferation of database systems based on diierent data models and query languages has created the need for techniques that support interoperability so that information may be shared among the database systems. This dissertation proposal describes a technique to support interoperable query processing when multiple heterogeneous databases are accessed. We will focus on the problem of suppor...

Query Mapping and Transformation Techniques for Problem Solvingwith Multiple

This paper describes a technique for information mediation when multiple heterogeneous knowledge and data servers are to be accessed during query processing. One problem is building an intelligent interface between each knowledge server (KS) and its processor (KP); and the second is to provide interoper-ability among multiple KP/KS so that a query may be answered using information from multiple...

A Methodology of Constructing Canonical Form Database Schemas in a Multiple Heterogenous Database Environment

Databases are usually developed independently by each group or organization to meet their own individual requirements. However, as interactions between groups and organizations become increasingly common, many applications end up requiring data not from one single database but from several related databases. Thus, users have to deal with databases whose designs have never been coordinated. Inte...

Schema Integration Methodology and Toolkit for Heterogeneous and Distributed Geographic Databases

Schema integration is one of the most difficult issues in the heterogeneous and distributed geographic database systems (GDSs). As the use of spatial information in various application areas becomes increasingly popular, the integration of geographic information has become a crucial task for decision makers. Most existing schema integration techniques described in the database literature, howev...
